Radiesse – what is the treatment and what effects can you expect?

Radiesse is an extremely effective and safe way to improve the appearance of your skin. Nowadays, we have a wide range of different treatments to choose from, which do not require the use of a scalpel, but the effects can exceed the wildest expectations in a short time. Is it worth to opt for Radiesse? If our problems are persistent wrinkles and loss of skin firmness, Radiesse may be an excellent choice.

What is the Radiesse treatment?

Radiesse treatment is an effective, non-surgical method of skin rejuvenation. The procedure itself lasts up to 30 minutes, and the effects are visible immediately. We can clearly see shallow wrinkles and a rebuilt skin structure. This is an excellent choice for those who value non-invasive rejuvenation methods.

Wrinkle filling – a non-invasive procedure

Already in 2006, the Radiesse treatment was recognised as safe for the body by the American Food and Drug Administration. The filler itself, which is used for treatments, consists of 70% gel foundation and 30% of CaHa – calcium hydroxyapatite. It is worth pointing out that the relationship of calcium and phosphorus is a natural building block of human bones and teeth. The product itself is not toxic and it does not cause any allergies or side effects. It has been successfully used for over 30 years when implanting dental and orthopaedic implants.

Indications for the Radiesse procedure

We don’t need to do any allergy tests before going for Radiesse. The preparation is safe for the body, but we always follow the opinion of a doctor. The specialist may tell us that some medications will need to be discontinued for several days, e.g. preparations that reduce blood clotting.
What are the indications for the Radiesse procedure? First of all, it is recommended to remove wrinkles, firm the skin, shape the cheeks and nose. Other indications include:

  • fuzzy oval – loss of face oval
  • modelling of the jaw line
  • nasolabial folds
  • flat profile
  • puppet lines
  • sagging facial skin
  • modelling of the chin skin
  • flat chin
  • sagging ear lobes
  • rejuvenation of the dorsal surface of the hand

The course of the Radiesse procedure

Radiesse treatment lasts from 15 to 30 minutes. The first step is to place the preparation in the syringe and then inject it with a thin needle or cannula. Anaesthesia is administered beforehand. The calcium gel and hydroxyapatite filler effectively fills wrinkles and at the same time creates the so-called scaffolding. It is on it that new collagen fibers are produced, which are made by fibroblasts. After some time, the gel is absorbed and collagen appears in its place. The effects of the Radiesse treatment last up to 18 months.

Radiesse – contraindications

Can anyone get a Radiesse treatment? Contraindications include allergy, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, inflammation, and cancer. It is also not recommended to perform the procedure during pregnancy or  breastfeeding. Radiesse should also not be used by patients who have recently had permanent filling treatments.

How to proceed after the procedure?

After Radiesse, itching, swelling, tenderness or slight bruising may occur. This should not be feared, because it is a normal reaction after the administration of collagen stimulants to the skin. Usually the side effects will subside after a few days. We also don’t have to avoid high temperatures. Importantly, Radiesse is a thermostable preparation, which means that it is not sensitive to thermal factors. You can use the sauna, solarium or the beach without any worries. Radiesse can also be combined with laser treatments, which is why it is an excellent alternative to fillers based on hyaluronic acid.

When it comes to the recommended number of treatments, Radiesse gives great results after just one visit. However, they disappear slowly over time, but last longer than e.g. the effects of hyaluronic acid treatments. Repetition is recommended after 18-24 months. Interestingly, some patients experience semi-permanent results that last longer. Maintaining effects will depend on, among others on the patient’s lifestyle, age, skin condition.

Is Radiesse painful?

Radiesse itself is not painful because the treatment area is anaesthetised with a professional cream. After the procedure, you may experience slight pain or bruising in the injection area, but this is natural.
